Unearthed from the archives of an old, weary and disillusioned soul and traveller, the dones debut LP 'an american scream' has finally germinated on Bandcamp. These songs were written throughout 2004-2006, with half of them remaining unmastered until May 2008. A sonic representation of Ryan's growing disillusionment, hostility and response towards the country he was born, raised and duped in.
Due to time and energy constraints, Travis McCauley was only able to contribute his lead guitar wizardry to 3 of the 10 tracks. Travis and Ryan have been close friends and have played together often since 2004. Travis's contributions to the formation and completion of this album were invaluable.
Initially released on June 2nd, 2008 for free as 192kbps mp3 downloads via www.anamericanscream.com
, this album has been downloaded thousands of times since it's initial release from all over the world. Permission to air these and other dones recordings for free have been received by the dones from around the globe since 2005. Throughout 2008-2010, 50-60 physical copies were produced by Ryan (the first 6-10 of them hand-numbered), handed out to friends and family, and left sporadically and randomly in places such as gig venues and elsewhere, including a 3-disc spattering at a local church.
The original version of this album ended with a cover of 'Death to Everyone' written by Bonnie "Prince" Billy, who received a copy from Ryan following Bonny's May 26th, 2009 show at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, TN. Ryan witnessed Him toss this copy 20-25 feet in the air while walking on the street to His mode of transportation before catching it behind His back and entering the vehicle. 'Death to Everyone' is not included on this digital-only release, because who would possibly consider angering the "Prince" legally or otherwise? ...as if this entry itself carries no risk...
This Bandcamp exclusive, digital-only release includes several bonus items, including new alternate artwork, the original lyrics insert, and the original pome insert 'GOD VS NUCLEAR PHYSICS' by FJK, the work of an under-appreciated genius. A wallpaper is included, the basis of the original physical disc art.
All songs written, performed, recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by Ryan Essex.
Travis McCauley played lead electric guitar on 'this process', 'the pain of others', and 'an american scream'.
The one and only Lord is featured at the end of the 'the sorts, shapes and sizes of debauchery'.
